Scorched Earth Art in the Antropocene

“Scorched Earth. Art in the Anthropocene” is a title that offers no comfortable shelter: it carries the concreteness of what is truly burning — forests, fields after drought, soil depleted by intensive farming — and, at the same time, the density of a metaphor that has always belonged to art. Scorched earth as pigment. Scorched earth as condition. Scorched earth as military strategy. Scorched earth as a question: what remains, and what can we still do with what remains.

The Prize is not merely an exhibition: it is a civic instrument, a public space in which the community — now a global one — questions itself and its own time. (...)At a moment when climate change is the most urgent and most neglected challenge of our era, having a place where that challenge is translated into images, gestures, materials, and bodies is a common good worth protecting (...) Scorched earth is not only destruction. It is also that from which, with care and with time, something may begin to grow again.  A.Guastaldi - S.Rosselli

The work speaks about its content, even though it does not represent it, and shows what remains when the content is no longer there. The sculpture displays reality, a known element, lived daily, yet rarely grasped in its depths. This is not merely a matter of “recycling,” but of realising how closely our way of living is bound to everything that allows us to sustain it. Rethinking the world differently, without falling back into the concept of mere self-sufficiency, is no easy task: to start anew, one must uncover the continuous contradictions in which we live, and which, without realising it, we live within.
